What is food waste?
Food waste is what is left over and cannot be saved after you have cooked or eaten food. All other residual waste should be put in a "shopping bag sized" plastic waste bag and thrown in the container for residual waste.
This belongs in the food waste bag
- Food scraps, raw and cooked
- Peels and leftovers from fruits and vegetables
- Fish and shellfish (including shells)
- Poultry, fish, and small, thin meat bones
- Eggs and eggshells
- Coffee grounds (including filters) and tea bags
- Paper towels
- Cooking fat (wiped up with paper towels)
Never throw plastic waste bags in the container for food waste!
This belongs in the residual waste bag
- Tobacco, cigarette butts, and snuff
- Chewing gum
- Potted plants and soil
- Cat litter, bedding, and sawdust from caged animals
- Vacuum cleaner bags
- Large meat bones
- Cotton swabs and bandages
- Tampons, sanitary pads, diapers
- Ice cream sticks and chopsticks
- Charcoal and ash
- Food in packaging
- Liquid cooking fat collected in a sealed container (up to one liter)
Cooking fat should not be poured down the sink as it causes blockages! Collect larger amounts of cooking fat over two liters in a container and take it to the municipal recycling stations.
To sort your food waste, you need
- A bag holder that keeps the bag ventilated and dry. If you haven’t received a bag holder, contact us.
- Paper bags designed for food waste. You can collect these from the holder outside the laundry room at Kyrkbacken 12.
Here’s how to do it
- Leave dry food waste. When the food waste is dry, the risk of odor decreases and the bag holds up better. The bag holder helps to ventilate and keep the food waste bag dry.
- Use only the brown food waste bag. All types of plastic bags, regardless of material, cause problems at the treatment plant. The plastic gets stuck in the machinery. Plastic bags are also difficult to break down and turn into microplastics that end up in nature. Therefore, always use paper bags made for food waste collection.
- Fill the bag up to the line inside and roll up the bag before placing it in the waste container. This way, you reduce the risk of odor and mess.
Tips when sorting
- Put a paper towel at the bottom of the bag. It absorbs moisture.
- Let wet food waste drain in the sink before putting it in the bag.
- Do you have food waste that smells a bit extra? Wrap it in some paper towel before throwing it away.
- Change the bag every other or every third day.
- Is the bag very wet? Use double paper bags.
